Date Night.....Maybe Not

This past weekend we went down to the coast for a wedding. Chris lived with 3 guys at Delta State and this was the last roomy to get hitched! We thought it was ideal because the wedding location was 20 miles from Chris's parents house so that meant a free place to stay and a free babysitter for date night. Well...Colby had other plans. He is a creature of habit and doesn't like change too much! As we were entering the reception I called to make sure that Colby was asleep and he was wide awake screaming Mama Mama. It was an hour or so past his bedtime and JoJo said he was having a panic attack every time they would put him in the bed. Colby always reads a book, sings a song, and lays straight down without any problems, so I knew it was because he wanted his mommy and daddy. He was doing great with Coach & JoJo, he just thought he should wait up for us to get home (he must get the stubbornness from his father LOL). Coach told us to stay and enjoy ourselves and Colby would eventually fall asleep when he got tired enough, but I knew he needed us and it was time to go home. We didn't even get to speak to the bride and groom, enjoy the food, or eat a delicious piece of cake but when I walked in the door and Colby ran into my arms screaming Mama Mama, I could careless!!!!!!!
We read our book, sang our song, and he went right to sleep without a peep! It's such a wonderful feeling to be a mom because you are everything to your child!!

Pump It Up

Today we went to Pump It Up for the first time, and Colby enjoyed every second of it! I think Chris and I had just as much fun as Colby. We did everything with him because there were a lot of big kids there and they weren't really paying attention around the younger ones. Colby didn't care, he acted like he was their size. He didn't have any fear and just jumped right on in like he was a big boy. He didn't stop running for the entire 2 hours. We were in good company with the Buckleys, Franz, and little Usry! I'm so excited about Colby's birthday party at Pump It Up, only 4 1/2 more months hehe! Colby's cousin is having a birthday party there in August so we are ready to go back!

Tickle Monster

JoJo came to town for a visit and we all went to lunch and had a great time! Every time JoJo comes to visit, Colby gets a new wardrobe ( Woo Hoo) but this time he also got the cutest book ever! Colby loves loves loves to look at books and always wants us to read to him so I know this will be a favorite for many years to come!!

It came with these adorable gloves and while reading the book it tells you where the Tickle Monster will tickle next. It's so funny and great for interactive reading that makes a book come alive! I give it a ten, thanks JoJo!

Colby wants to be the Tickle Monster and he thinks it's hilarious to tickle me. He is kinda rough though and every time I say "Ouch" he stops to kiss it, he is my sweetheart!

A Love For Reading

I have a huge love for reading and I hope to pass it onto Colby! I think it's one of the best gifts you can ever give a child! He already has favorite books and he pretends to read each page. It just melts my heart when I walk into his room and see this:

He loves to pick out a book to read!!

You can never have too many books!

"A home without books is a body without soul.”

"If you read a lot of books you are considered well read. But if you watch a lot of TV, you're not considered well viewed.”
Lily Tomlin

The greatest gift is a passion for reading. It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites, it gives you knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind. It is a moral illumination.

10 Ways to Teach Your Children Faith

I'm going to say it again..............you have to read A Legacy of Love: A Plan for Parenting on Purpose by Tim Kimmel.

My insights I received about teaching Colby faith.

Naturally parents want to remove any roadblocks to faith. So they cloister their children in the early years. They pick their friends, monitor the information coming in, get them in church, Sunday school, parochial schools, and bible clubs. These are all great and sets them on the right track but two things parents do can backfire.

Mistake #1

Assume that training about the christian life is going to guarantee the assumed result- that a child will embrace knowledge and take it to heart.

Christianity is not a head trip. It is a modeled belief system supported by knowledge. A child will not accept a life plan because you speak the words. If a child is going to accept your faith as his own, he must see you live it out! Alive and breathing and functioning in you!

Parents must be prepared to lay their faith on life's firing line. It needs to be visible, embraceable, measurable, and transferable.

Mistake #2

Good christian parents concern themselves with young children's need for salvation.

Parents pressure their children to pray the prayer and ask Jesus into their heart. Children want to please their parents so unfortunately the faith many of them exercise is not the faith in Christ but faith in their parents.

Children who embrace their parents' faith rather than forming their own can develop a false sense of security. Parents can avoid this trap by creating a loving, caring, spiritual environment, fleshed out in a disciplined way in the home. The gospel message transmitted through church, school, and family conversations can be used by the Holy Spirit to draw the child to himself....on his timetable.

TEN WAYS TO TEACH YOUR CHILDREN FAITH

1. Let them find you reading your bible every morning when they arise.

2. Have them pray at mealtimes and at bedtime.

3. Watch the movie Inherit the Wind with them, then discuss their feelings.

4. Trace the root of faith in their family tree.

5. Plant a garden and explain how you have to exercise patience and trust in God's laws of nature.

6. Have them prepare a three minute testimony about their faith in God.

7. Have them share their testimony with a friend.

8. Remind them of answered prayer.

9. Pray for an unsaved or sick friend or relative everyday.

10. Using qualified professionals, take your older children through a course that emphasizes faith in a rope, learning techniques as rock climbing. This should provide many word pictures to discuss topics like faith, trust, and responding to crisis.

Insights about teaching your child integrity coming next...................

We went to the Balloon Glow on July 3rd. The boys looked at the balloons for about a second but were more interested in playing with each other and eating snow cones. We tried to stay for the fireworks but the boys couldn't take it any longer and had to go home for bed, maybe next year!

Convictions May Not Bring Popularity

I was reading in the Sunherald how Mississippi received the honors of the unhealthiest children for the 5th year in a row. It justified our shortcomings to being undereducated and not having access to healthy foods, mainly because we are poor. There is truth to the allegations but a bigger reason is "there isn't much support!"

Think about it......how many people do you know that actually cares about their health and what they put in their body? Chris and I actually get ridiculed for eating healthy and teaching our son healthy eating habits.

Statements we hear all the time

Live a little
Let him be a kid
If you don't let him eat junk, he will rebel one day
Ya'll are health freaks

This is the mindset of most Mississippians, no wonder we have held this great honor for 5 years in a row. People think we are cruel because we don't let Colby eat junk food everyday, drink soda, eat fried food and fast food (YUCK) etc. Chris and I don't do these things so why in the world would we encourage Colby to do so! I believe that God gave us one body and one life and it's our responsibility to not abuse it! We feel even stronger that it's our responsibility to keep Colby healthy. I strongly believe "you are what you eat". Your diet affects mood, sleep, immune system, and so much more!

When people make rude comments or jokes about it, I remind myself that they probably just don't know any better or they are unhappy with their own choices! I am reading Tim Kimmel Legacy of Love A Plan for Parenting on Purpose. After reading this article, I picked it up and began reading and was smiling because God always has a way of making connections.

I read:
Truth is at the core of integrity. Convictions enable truth to take action in our life. Reputation is the outcome of living by convictions. Truth and living by convictions may not bring us popularity.

Jesus said, "blessed are you when men cast insults at you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, on account of me. Rejoice, and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great" (Matthew 5:11-12)

It's so amazing to be loved and reassured by such an awesome God!

Speaking of this amazing book, you have to read it! I have read over 50 parenting books and this one is my all time favorite! It's bible based and tells you how to teach your children Faith, integrity, poise, discipline, endurance, and courage. I absolutely love love love it!

Go get it

I'm still in the process of reading it and there is so much I want to share, so insights are on the way!
